I just want to say I'm please to see that someone has undertaken the unenviable task of locating Gilroy in the time space continuum. Hell seems like a good place to start. I'm an English major and a writer and I'm suffocating under the stagnant community. The only thing worse than the non-existent nightlife is the ridiculous cost to live here.
Do you guys know that there was a "sex club" here for about three months before the city forced to move out of town two years ago... sadly, I could never find their meeting spots :(
Peace

Re: Gilroy Choke Hold
Thu, June 17, 2004 - 9:02 AMI went to Gilroy to Visit Ted and the night life was great. I'm not sure what your talking about. We danced all night long. -

Fri, June 18, 2004 - 3:45 PMHey Joshua,
I'm glad you had a good time in Gilas. The Mexican clubs in Gilroy are some of the best in the area, in fact, I wrote a feature length screenplay that takes place in one of them. The bars, well, they're what you would expect, I stopped drinking however(for the most part :), so they don't do much for me. All I'm saying is that it's one thing to visit for a weekend, it's another to live here. And venting... sometimes that's just good for the soul. -

But (arti)chokes are the official crop of Castroville!
Sat, June 19, 2004 - 11:30 AMMaybe this is a bit too personal a question, but, why, as an adult, which I assume you are, do you live in Gilroy? When I was in high school there, the "cool" teachers all lived in Santa Cruz and commuted in.
I spent 17 1/2 years there ... but those were the years from infancy to high school graduation.
Re: Mexican Bars
- I fear that with all the downtown revitalization, the Mexican bars might be developed out of downtown ... -

Mon, June 21, 2004 - 12:47 PMYour question is definitely not too personal :). I'm not a teacher if that is what you are referencing, I'm a writer with little money and a lot of family in Gilroy. I have three brothers and one sister who live here...that means a ton of nephews and nieces. Plus, I just graduated from college two years ago so give me some time to sell :) Yes I'm an adult and I love santa cruz, but I've found that living there doesn't automatically make you "cool." I get your point however, it's true that Santa cruz attracts many creative and interesting people to live there. Do you have any family/friends that you come to visit? Have you broken all ties? -

I was using teachers as an example of the adults I knew who worked in Gilroy who weren't parents with kids. Plus, I think I got you confused with other folks on this list who are teachers. Sorry.
>Yes I'm an adult and I love santa cruz, but I've found that living there doesn't automatically make you "cool." I get your point however, it's true that Santa cruz attracts many creative and interesting people to live there.
I was only thinking of the fact that there's more to do in Santa Cruz for a creative person like yourself. But it's gotten damn expensive to live there, apparently, what with the Highway 17 Warriors and all.
>Do you have any family/friends that you come to visit? Have you broken all ties?
My parents still live there, and I visit every so often. The rest of the family lives in Monterey (and has for five generations or so) ... when I was a teenager, I resented my parents for having chosen to move to Gilroy, because I thought Monterey would have been a more enjoyable place to grow up. Most of my friends moved away, though I went to college back east and effectively lost touch with most of my Gilroy friends during that time. I actually worked part time in Gilroy for several months earlier this year. It wasn't unpleasant. I don't mind visiting. The latest restaurant incarnation of Old City Hall has pretty good food, and the latest incarnation of Gilroy Coffee Roasting has pretty good coffee. -

Why am I here?
Sun, August 1, 2004 - 1:47 PMHi Sarah, Hi Mario--
Thanks for stopping by. I'm the teacher Sarah was referring to. As for what I'm doing here-- I ask myself that constantly. I moved here for the job, sight unseen, and decided that if I was working here, I might as well live here, too. Now that I've been here for a year and have gotten my bearings, I'm thinking of moving somehwere a little further out.
I just made some new friends who live in the middle of a field in a little cottage where they can farm organically in their backyard.
Me, I live with a redneck and a hermit in a broken down old house.
However, I've got a girlfrind up here now and we are thinking of getting a little hose together. I don't know if Santa Cruz will be the place, though. I don't think I would want to leave it every day to come to Gilroy!

Re: Gilroy Choke Hold
Tue, April 26, 2005 - 11:26 PMWhich mexican clubs, like Rio Nilo? I haven't been in, mostly because banda music kinda bugs IMHO.
However, I went to La Cantinita out on Hecker Pass and Watsonville Road and that was pretty interesting. The uprght bass player's bass took up half the bar!! It was a slow night. It's Gilroy, what do you expect?
I don't get out to the bars much. When I drink, it's at the Happy Dog. That place is my "Cheers" in this town, and the bartender Chrissy is hot stuff! -

Re: Gilroy Choke Hold
Thu, April 28, 2005 - 1:37 PMHey Ted,
yeah the Rio Nilo can get pretty hoppin', the Strand (in downtown) gets some big bands and the new one that re-opened across from St. Mary's used to get a lot of people. I've never been to La Cantinita, the only place I might go these days is Crazy Coyote on Thursday to see some high school friends and listen to Karaoke.
I’m definitely putting some miles on my car every weekend :)
Damn gas prices!!
