What is there to do in Gilroy?

topic posted Thu, January 22, 2004 - 10:32 AM by  Audio
I have been here since September, and I wonder what is going on in all these empty, dark houses that make up the town of Gilroy? Is everybody just staying home watching cable, playing Xbox, and drinking?

What do you do when you're here?

Guidebook: What you do when you move to Gilroy.

    1. You come with happy expectations of mountains and country people.
    2. You wait for a few months, losing yourself in work and not really thinking about the fact that you haven't met anyone under the age of 49.
    3. You begin actively seeking out cool people under the age of 49, but find that your efforts are thwarted by the plethora of pro-life, pro-drag racing, and pro-mullet people.
    4. You begin to kill.

Well, you could always do what many other natives do to ease the pain.... EAT!

There are many places to get inexpensive comfort food of the most heart- cloggingly fatty variety here in the fair city of Gilroy.

Now you can attempt to fill that gnawing, empty feeling we all experience with carnitas chimichangas, slurpees, and fried chicken.

After all that, you won't have the energy to kill: the very mechanism which holds the social fabric of Gilroy together.

I travel up to the city twice a week for some amazing electronic music events. SF is not too far away and if you carpool it can be relatively inexpensive. I am heading up to the city this Wednesday for a psytrance music party at a club called "Il Pirata". Great music and really intriguing people. To be honest, I've lived here all my life and I have yet to find a good place to hang-out. The good thing is that we are so close to Santa Cruz and San Francisco.

Go to Sue's at 5th and Monterey Sts in the historic section of Gilroy! (On the opposite side of 101 from the outlets and big box stores)

The BEST coffeehouse in the valley. We roast our own coffee and serve it with feeling. All the greats and more: espresso, lattes, capucchinos, chai, smoothies. AND FOOD: homemade soups, sandwiches, wraps, salads, and GREAT SWEETS!

Friday nights we have live music. Tuesdays open mic. Sundays musicians are welcome to jam.

Good to hear the coffee shop is still there...I guess it is Sue's now, no longer the Coffee Roasting Club eh? I will definitely stop by for some coffee next time I am in town visiting the family!

Gilroy is a lot more happening these days than when I used to live there, that's for sure! It was insane when I went a couple weeks ago and saw how much new housing had been developed since I was there last. Absolutely incredible I tell ya!

Is what used to be Station 55 still open near the Sue's? It was a fire station turned restaurant before...

Station 55 has gone through countless incarnations ... it is now the Happy Dog pizza place. Apparently they have some kind of open mic night or karaoke or something once a week.

There's also a great taqueria across the street ... forgot the name.

Wow....Happy Dog Pizza doesn't sound all that hot to me....it is a cute space though. I am sure someone can do a little better than Happy Dog Pizza...don't you? : )

I love the chicken super burritos at SUPER TAQUERIA on 10th Street. I think that may even still be around...yes? Gosh, just thinking about it is making me crave one...I guess I am off to the Mission District tonight for a yummy replacement....

To all those in the bay area....ENJOY THE DAY! This sunshine we are having today is FANTABULOUS!!!! Quite a change from what we have had for the last...i don't know how many...but it sure was a LOT.....days.

          Aloha!

Hey what is the name of that old historic building on a corner that used to be the court house I think? It's in downtown. Anyone know what I'm talking about? Last time I saw it it was some fancy restaurant.

Old City Hall on Monterey St.? It's been countless fancy restaurants ... the last time I went there was 2 years ago, and it was really good, but now it's under new ownership ...

Come on...are you talking about "Chips N Salsa"? That place is the best thing that Gilroy has to offer for night life and it is incredibly disappointing.
Lets be honest here, there isn't anything worthwhile to do in Gilroy...especially in regards to night life.

                  - I live in Oakland. My parents live in Gilroy, but they're 60 years old and nightlife for them equals going out to dinner after 8pm then going home and watching their latest netflix delivery and falling asleep halfway through.

Hmmm...dare I say, nothing??? Outlet shopping? Perusing the vast array of choice eateries? Sorry for the sarcasm--I actually like it here, but the lack of social interaction can get to me a little. Then I just drive up to San Jose and get some Peet's coffee in Willow Glen and talk to all of my old customers!

The Gaslighter's still open? I thought they closed that place down a while ago......although I could be thinking about the one in Sunnyvale. Anyway, other than the Gaslighter, there's always the Crazy Coyote. Its cool sometimes when its not a honkey tonk. Other than that, Super Tac is your best bet.

Mt. Madonna is nearby, which is a good place to hike and camp. Other than that there isn't anything fun to do around Gilroy. San Jose is probably the closest place with any kind of night life.
